Mothers Day for peace

This is a little factoid I like, which you may or may not know:

Mother’s Day was originally designated as a day to inspire people to work for peace. It was conceived after wars at home and abroad by American abolitionist and suffragist Julia Ward Howe.

So first off, don’t let anyone tell you this is a Hallmark Holiday that need not be recognized!

And if you are a mom, try giving yourself this gift, from Howe’s “Mother’s Day Proclamation”:

Let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel.

Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace,
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
But of God.

  1. Thanks. I am one of those who thinks it is a Hallmark holiday. How lucky we are to have our dear little children. It breaks my heart to think of all the mothers who have lost children because the world is such an unpeaceful place.
